BOABENG-FIEMA MONKEY SANCTUARY

Located in the Nkoranza District, 22 km north of Nkoranza, the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary is home to a rare breed of monkeys considered citizens of the town. Established in 1974, the sanctuary protects the sacred black and white silky colobus and brown Mona monkeys that inhabit the forest.

It is a taboo to kill any of the monkeys. They have access to all parts of the village, and locals even plant fruit trees for them. When a monkey dies, it is given a proper burial in a coffin at the monkey cemetery, with special funeral rites performed. With over 700 monkeys living in a natural environment, it is the leading monkey sanctuary in Ghana.
