The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including six primate species (such as the black and white colobus monkeys), elephants, and various antelope species. It also serves as a habitat for manatees and African clawless otters in the arms of Lake Volta. With at least 236 bird species, the park has been designated an Important Bird Area.
It is the only wildlife territory in Ghana that borders Lake Volta, the world's largest man-made body of water.
